They're Doing in America What They Did within Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis projected his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the world' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the president seek to颠覆 the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and because the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value within Christian narrative.

It is decidedly not the story of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to evade secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to offer the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a method to instruct the attacker; his method regarding offenses states that when an individual takes your coat you should give him your sweater as well.

The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a type of radical love centered on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: attractive to the general public, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. In the fifties it was controlled via weakening – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump develop in this past year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the movement that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the best parts in US history.

We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to that which renders it special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In both situations does it imply acting as if the most damaging of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both humility and conviction, a blend that serious American Christians should be comfortable with.
