Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
